Mango exports for the current will begin May 20. The target set for mango exports this season is set at 100,000 tons.
According to Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Association a 10 percent increased in mango exports is expected this season.
However, in case strict implementation of ban on using wooden boxes could push mango exports by as much as 20-25 percent.
According to Waheed Ahmad, the chairman of Research and development of the Association, mango exports of 94,000 helped Pakistan earn foreign exchange of $ 48 million last season and if the 100,000 tons target is achieved this season it would help earn a foreign exchange of $ 60 million.
He further informed that the overall mango production this season is expected to be around 1.8 million tons, however, mango crop has extensively been damaged in upper areas of Punjab due to excesses of weather.
