LONDON: August 29 (today) marks the 58th birth anniversary of the “The King of Pop” Michael Jackson.
Michael Jackson was born on August 29th, 1958 Known as one of the most loved and influential entertainers of all time, he started off his musical career by being the member of “Jackson 5”. Although he was a mega-star since his early years, the star had a troubled childhood and spoke about it frequently.
The art of music videos and dancing in his videos was revolutionized by Jackson’s creativity. He brought new ideas which influenced other stars as well.
He innovated pop music which gave him the title of “King of Pop”. His five albums namely “Off the Wall,” “Thriller,” “Bad,” “Dangerous” and “HIStory,” are included in the top selling albums ever whereas “Thriller” became the largest selling album after it sold more than 70 million copies.
Over 100 million copies of singles from Thriller were sold across the world, which is another record.He sold nearly 750 million records worldwide in his career in which 13 were No.1s.
He made it to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice and was recognized as the Most Successful Entertainer. “Thriller” was named as the Most Sold Album of All Time by the Guinness Book of World Records.
His concerts used to be sold out and thousands of people used to attend his electrifying and awe-inspiring shows.
The King of Pop won 13 Grammy Awards in his career and was awarded the American Music Award’s Artist of the Century Award as well.
His autobiography “Moonwalk” went on to become a best seller in the New York Times.
Jackson, apart from being a great musician, was also a philanthropist. He was the founder of “Heal The World” Foundation, which helped children around the world.
He co-wrote the song “We Are the World” for the victims of famine in Africa during the early 80s. We Are the World sold more than 20 million copies and is one of the greatest charity songs to be released.
The star died on June 25, 2009 after suffering from cardiac arrest.
MJ is undoubtedly one of the greatest artists. Whether it was music, charity work or creativity, Michael Jackson changed the definition of the word artist.
