Army chief in Malaysia on two-day official visit

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif arrived in Malaysia on a two-day official visit on Wednesday.

A contingent of the Malaysian Army presented guard of honour to Gen Raheel Sharif on arrival at the Army Headquarters.

According to a press statement from the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), the army chief held separate meetings with Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Tan Sri Dato Sri Haji Zulkifeli bin Mohd Zin, and Chief of Malaysian Army General Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi bin Raja Mohamed Noor.

Gen Raheel Sharif “was introduced to senior army commanders and was given a detailed briefing on Operational and training aspects of the Malaysian Army”, said the ISPR.

Military to military relations, joint military training and defence collaboration were discussed during Gen Sharif’s meetings with the Malaysian military leadership.

The “Malaysian CDF and Army Chief praised Pakistan Army’s achievements in the fight against terrorism and efforts for regional peace and stability,” said the ISPR statement.

“Malaysia and Pakistan had convergence of interests in various domains of regional security and the need to go after terrorism indiscriminately,” said Gen Raheel Sharif.

Terms of reference were signed between the Pakistani and Malaysian militaries to institutionalise a long term framework for military cooperation.

The army chief also met the Malaysian Defence Minister Dato Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein at Putrajaya.

During the meeting, Malaysian Defence Minister expressed his desire to expand the range of defence collaboration, mutually benefitting from each other’s experience and professional skills.

He reiterated that the spirit of cooperation will be helpful in strengthening the existing relationship between the two armies evolving into a long term strategic partnership, said the ISPR statement.
