KARACHI: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi has sent nine members of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) including sector incharge Zubair Ashraf, joint sector incharge Shakir Raza and Muhammad Hamid on 90-day remand in Rangers’ custody today (Friday).
Sources report that the suspects were presented before the court amid tight security.
The court granted the remand on the request of Rangers’ law officer.
The suspects were arrested a day before on the charges of receiving extortion money and forceful Zakat.
Earlier, Rangers during an operation in the areas of Rizvia and Gulbahar arrested at least 23 members of MQM.
According to Rangers spokesperson,16 political activists were detained from Rizvia society who were collecting Fitra donations forcefully from the area.
The spokesperson stated that 1000 Fitra receipts and a sum of Rs31,500 has been confiscated from the possession of the suspects who will be presented before the court.
Rangers spokesperson also said that no party is allowed to collect money on the name of forceful Fitra and provided a helpline-1101 to report about such incidents.
On the other hand, Rangers while sealing all the entry and exit points of Gulbahar’s area Peetal, conducted door to door search and arrested as many as seven suspects who belong to a political party.
