ISLAMABAD: Chairman Senate Raza Rabbani has on Monday declared local body elections in Islamabad as unconstitutional. He said that the election activities in presence of the existing law are contradicting the constitution.

Giving his ruling on the Islamabad local body elections, Senator Raza Rabbani said that legislation phases are still pending regarding the local body elections rule in Islamabad. He said that holding local body elections without legislation is unconstitutional.

Raza Rabbani asked the President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain to call a joint session of the parliament for the approval of the law. “As Chairman Senate, it is my duty to protect the constitution”, he said. He said that no person or institution has a right to intervene in parliament’s prerogative.

Chairman Senate ordered to send the copies of his ruling to the Election Commission, Law Ministry, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and Speaker National Assembly.
