Former NADRA Asst. Director arrested in Sharbat Gula case

PESHAWAR: Former Assistant Director of NADRA, Imad Khan, was arrested on Friday by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) for issuing a fake National Identity Card to Afghan national Sharbat Gula.

The ex-NADRA Assistant Director had been in hiding, as per FIA officials. Sharbat Gula had been arrested earlier this week from Pakistan for carrying a fake NIC. Currently, three NADRA officials are being tried in court for issuing Sharbat Gula a fake National Identity Card.

Two other accused in the case have been granted bail.

Sharbat Gula, who was known as the ‘Mona Lisa of Afghanistan’ as well as the ‘National Geographic girl’ became famous when a picture of her made the cover of a National Geographic magazine in 1985. She was photographed at a refugee camp in Pakistan and her eyes became the subject of much interest and intrigue around the world.

On Wednesday, she was deported from Pakistan to Afghanistan.
