KARACHI: Geeta, a deaf-mute Indian woman who lost her family when she wandered over one of the world’s most militarised borders as a child, has finally found her family.

Sources told that Geeta has identified her father, step-mother and siblings from a photograph sent to her by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. The family reportedly lives in Bihar.

Geeta, a young Hindu woman now in her early 20s, was around 11 years old when she inadvertently crossed the border from India to Pakistan, a mistake that sparked an odyssey to find her family.

It was a mistake that led to a long search for her family that captivated the public after a hit film with a similar plot was released in July.

The movie “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” was released on July 17. Superstar Salman Khan plays an Indian man who finds a mute Pakistani girl and tries to reunite her with her family.

The scriptwriters were unaware of Geeta’s story, but the movie led to a surge in interest in her case.

Sources told that Geeta is likely to be flown home after as soon as her documents are sorted out.
