KARACHI: Police on Sunday claimed to have arrested an alleged target killer, associated with a political party, who had killed Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai and three other religious scholars in Karachi.
In May 2004, renowned religious scholar Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai was assassinated in gun attack on his car outside his home a few yards from the Jamia Binnoria in Jamshed Town of Karachi.
“Wasi Haider son of Hassan Raza has made some shocking revelations during initial interrogation. He has confessed to killing Mufti Shamzai and seven other people. He also murdered Maulan Abdul Majeed Deenpuri, Hafiz Muhammad Ehsan Ali Shah and Mufti Sahel Muhammad Qazi in 2013,” a police official said.
According to police, the accused was arrested during an encounter with police in Federal Industrial Area.
Police claimed that the alleged ‘target-killer’ had also claimed to have eliminated three scrap dealers in Lines Area for not providing extortion money, besides killing police inspector Nasir-ul-Hassan and a high court employee Bashir Ahmed.
According to DIG West Feroz Shah, the accused moved from Hyderabad to Karachi in 2002 and joined a political party in the metropolis in 2004.
He said the alleged target killer was also involved in killing political party workers and businessmen, adding that a TT pistol and hand grenade were recovered from his possession.
