ISLAMABAD: Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan has said that after learning from last experience, the PTI has decided to hold direct intra-party elections.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the PTI chief said Justice (retd) Wajihuddin had declared previous intra-party election null and void and his decision was accepted by the party.

Imran added that despite completing its mandate, the election tribunal headed by Justice (Retd) Wajihuddin continued to function.

PTI chief said new election commissioner Tasneem Noorani appointed members of the election commission himself and denied the party chairman right of how the election needs to be conducted. “Making decisions about power centers in the party is not the election commissioner’s job,” he said.

Expressing disappointment over the resignation of the election commissioner, he said Noorani recommended that voting should be done via phones. “I was not sure of how could it be done yet I asked election commissioner to explain about technicalities,” Imran stated, adding that he was waiting for the response when Noorani resigned from his post.

“We believe election commissioner’s job is to get the elections done in a free and fair manner,” PTI chief further added.

He said that party membership deadline has been extended till April 15 as new election commissioner has been appointed.

Imran Khan lamented that he is being blamed for advising the national team ahead of the clash with India during the World T20 match in Kolkata. “My advice to the team was being blamed for the defeat [against India],” Imran said.

Imran further said Najam Sethi will not retire from his position even if everyone else [responsible for the defeat] tendered their resignations. “On one end, we have Najam Sethi while at the other end we have Shaharyar Khan,” Imran said.
