ISLAMABAD: The administration of federal capital will launch the second phase of its operation on Friday against the largest illegal settlement commonly known as Afghan Basti in Islamabad area of I-11.

In yesterday’s operation, the area turned into a virtual battlefield when squatters of Afghan Basti (shanty town) clashed with the police personnel, who were busy with bulldozing their houses.

The daylong clashes left wounded over two dozen people including (assistant commissioner) AC Ali Asghar and two police. The glasses of AC Rabia Aurangzeb’s vehicle were smashed.

Smartly clad in riot gear, police in concert with rangers and in supervision of Capital Development Authority officials started operation at 1pm yesterday. Soon afterwards, the slum dwellers burst into pelting stones at the security personnel.

Police tried to subdue the adamant illegal colonists with the help of free use of baton-charge, tear-gas shells and water-cannons.

Police action injured at least 18 people who were shifted to PIMS. Most of them were discharged after first aid treatment from the hospital.

Over 150 out of 800 houses and shanties were demolished in CDA action. Later, police encircled the vacated area with barbed wire.

At sunset, the operation machinery and personnel were withdrawn from the illegal locality of interlopers. The operation will again be launched on Friday morning.
