TAPI project will promote peace and trade in the region: PM Nawaz

ASHGABAT: The foundation stone of TAPI gas pipeline project was laid at the Mary city of Turkmenistan on Sunday.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and Indian Vice President Muhammad Hamid Ansari jointly performed the ground breaking of the 10 billion dollars trans regional energy project.

Addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said the groundbreaking of this mega project is the outcome of political acumen of the four regional countries.

PM said TAPI gas pipeline project will help promote peace and trade amongst the regional countries.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said TAPI project holds and significant place in Pakistan’s energy outlook.

The premier said it serves as vital component of new national energy policy and plans for mitigating country’s energy deficiency through import of natural gas and electricity.

Nawaz Sharif said CASA-1000 electricity project is also being implemented expeditiously.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said the project will change the economic landscape of this region. The TAPI reflects the immense potential of the region to move forward in different fields.

He said credit goes to the leaders of Pakistan and Turkmenistan for the launch of this project.

On this occasion, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan also signed a Memorandum of Understanding under which Pakistan will import electricity from Turkmenistan via Afghanistan.

Radio Pakistan’s correspondent reports that with the completion of 1735 kilometer gas pipeline, Pakistan will get 1,325 mmcfd supply of natural gas which will help overcome the energy deficits.

The project to be completed by 2018 will bring gas from Turkmenistation to Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
