Violent protest by MQM workers in Karachi, one killed

KARACHI: Workers from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) have turned to violence and surrounded the offices of ARY and Samaa in the city. Aerial firing has also been reported.

At least one person reportedly injured in the firing in Zainab market has succumbed to his wounds at the hospital.

A motorcycle, and a police mobile was set on fire while shops at Zainab Market and nearby markets were closed.

There are traffic jams in areas surrounding I.I.Chundrigar road, while the road leading to CM House has also been shut.

The CM has telephoned IG Sindh and directed action against those involved.

Meanwhile, IG Sindh police AD Khawaja has directed the DIG south to restore law and order situation on the spot, and take strict action against the miscreants.

According to a statement, the police chief also issued orders to increase police patrolling on the streets, besides providing improved security to all media houses.

Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif condemned the attack and directed the related officials to ensure the safety of life and property of the people and the media houses. He directed that action needs to be taken against the extremist elements behind spreading the unrest.

Rangers Director General (DG) Major General Bilal Akbar while commenting upon the situation, stated that the entire incident was being overviewed, adding that action shall be taken against those behind spreading the unrest. He added that those who tool the law into their hands shall not be forgiven.

MQM workers had organised a hunger strike unto death near Karachi Press Club, which was a few hundred metres in distance to the office of the ARY news channel.

The hunger strike camp of MQM was disbanded after the violent protests.
