UN-backed research ship investigates Indian Ocean for plastic waste

The United Nations is supporting a project aiming to investigate Indian Ocean for plastic waste, underscoring the risk of dramatic upheavals in marine ecosystems.

The UN-backed research vessel operated by the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research in collaboration with Food and Agriculture Organization to collect information on marine resources and to help train scientists from around the world.

It said that an estimated 5 trillion pieces of plastic currently float in the world’s oceans, up from none in 1950.

Eighteen scientists from eight countries and crew are aboard now, in the second of two seasonal missions.
