PERTH, Australia: Left-arm spinner Steve O’Keefe has been added to Australia’s squad for the inaugural day-night test against New Zealand in Adelaide, while Shaun Marsh and James Pattinson have also been recalled.
Cricket Australia on Wednesday said Marsh will play the third test beginning Nov. 27 in place of injured batsman Usman Khawaja (hamstring). Pattinson and Peter Siddle, who was 12th man in the second test, are contenders for the pace spot available after Mitchell Johnson’s retirement this week.
There were no other changes to the squad that drew with New Zealand in Perth. Australia won the first test in Brisbane by 208 runs.
O’Keefe made his test debut against Pakistan last year and also has experience with the pink ball that will be used in the day-night match — he took 11 wickets in a domestic game at the Adelaide Oval in 2014.
Australian selectors are considering using two spinners for the Adelaide test.
“Stephen was included in our squad that was to go to Bangladesh and if he should get an opportunity we think he will make the most of it,” chairman of selectors Rod Marsh said in a statement. “We have opted to include an extra spinner in the squad for Adelaide as we are unsure what conditions we will see there.”
Australia postponed indefinitely a two-test tour of Bangladesh this month due to security concerns.
Marsh has been given another chance to extend his off-and-on test career and play alongside brother Mitch. The left-hander hasn’t featured for Australia since the fourth Ashes test last year when he scored just two runs as England reclaimed the urn.
“Shaun was unlucky to miss out on the squad for the first two (New Zealand) tests and since then has scored consistently in Sheffield Shield,” said Rod Marsh, who is not related to Shaun. “So we believe he deserves this opportunity.”
Pattinson, who has sustained a series of injuries, could play his first test since March 2014.
“James has made a good return to Shield cricket following his injury and has earned this recall,” Marsh said.
Australia squad: David Warner, Joe Burns, Steve Smith (captain), Shaun Marsh, Adam Voges, Mitch Marsh, Peter Nevill, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, James Pattinson, Nathan Lyon, Steve O’Keefe, Peter Siddle.
