Canada defeat China in Women World Cup opener

Christine Sinclair slotted home a 92nd-minute penalty for Canada to give the host nation a hard-earned 1-0 win over China in the opening game of the 2015 Women’s World Cup.

With the game in the second of three minutes of stoppage time Canada’s Adriana Leon tumbled under the challenge of Zhao Rong in the penalty area. Sinclair, the Canada captain and veteran of 223 caps and 153 international goals, stepped up and narrowly beat the despairing dive of Wang Fei in the China goal.

The late goal came to the delight of the vast majority of the 53,058 in the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton – the attendance is a record for a national team game in any sport in the country.
