Silverstone (United Kingdom): Lewis Hamilton left it late to grab pole position for his home British Grand Prix on Sunday, ahead of Mercedes team-mate and fierce championship rival Nico Rosberg.

The Mercedes one-two was followed up by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who was third quickest at an overcast Silverstone on Saturday, where Hamilton has dominated the action in practice and qualifying.

Reigning world champion Hamilton, who is 11 points behind Rosberg in the drivers’ standings, had his first lap deleted by the stewards for exceeding track limits.

But the Briton, who had a huge Silverstone crowd behind him and celebrated in front of them afterwards, returned to the track to set an even quicker time to leave the German Rosberg trailing by three-tenths of a second.

Alongside Verstappen in the second row was the fellow Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo.
