IOC approves cycling venues for Tokyo Olympics

LAUSANNE: After months of negotiations, the IOC has approved the cycling venues for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

In the biggest change, the indoor track cycling events will be moved to Izu, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from Tokyo.

The international cycling union had initially resisted the move, saying it would detract from the Olympic experience.

The IOC says the move will save about $100 million, bringing to $1.8 billion the total in savings from a series of venue changes.

The IOC says an existing velodrome in Izu will undergo “significant refurbishment” and seating capacity will be increased. Mountain bike events will also take place at an existing course in Izu.

Road races and time trials will take place in Tokyo, with the start and finish at the Imperial Palace Garden. BMX events will be held at a purpose-built venue at Ariake in Tokyo.
