KARACHI: Javed Afridi, the Chief Executive of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Peshawar Zalmi, on Monday announced a sum of USD 20,000 and USD 5,000 for West Indies captain Darren Sammy and Bangladesh’s opening batsman Tamim Iqbal respectively for their performances in the recently concluded World T20.
Sammy’s Windies beat England by four wickets on Sunday to clinch the World T20 title for the second time.
Chasing down England’s 155, the West Indian innings relied on a responsible 66-ball 85 by Marlon Samuels and a final push that was provided by Carlos Brathwaite as he hit Ben Stokes out of the park four times on four consecutive deliveries in the last over.
The Windies captain Sammy and Bangladesh’s Tamim were a part of Peshawar Zalmi in the inaugural edition of the PSL.
Though Zalmi’s journey couldn’t go beyond the Qualifying Finals, it turned out to be the people’s team with capacity crowd witnessed in most of its matches.
Both Sammy and Tamim played a pivotal role in ensuring Zalmi a smooth march to the final round of the PSL.
“I hereby announce a sum of USD 20,000 for Darren Sammy from Peshawar Zalmi platform for his excellent team spirit and overall performance,” said Afridi in a tweet.
In another tweet, the Peshawar Zalmi boss praised Tamim’s services and said: “I hereby announce a sum of USD 5,000 for Tamim Iqbal from Peshawar Zalmi platform for being [one of the] highest run scorers in World T20.”
Tamim didn’t take long to acknowledge Afridi’s support and replied: “Very humbled by your gesture and appreciation. Not everyone appreciates achievements. Glad to have been acquainted with you.”
“Eagerly waiting to get in action with the Zalmi teammates and meet my Peshawar Zalmi fans,” tweeted the Bangladesh batting star.
