British citizen detained for Amsterdam airport bomb hoax

AMSTERDAM: A 29-year-old Briton was arrested Friday at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport after he claimed he was carrying explosives, prompting the temporary evacuation of a departure lounge, Dutch media reported.

“We first checked if the man had anything on him … then we searched his bags with dogs. We found nothing and the situation returned to normal,” a police spokesperson told Dutch radio.

Making false bomb threats is a criminal act in the Netherlands, and the man will face charges after the case is turned over to a prosecutor, said Eric Vermeulen of the Dutch Royal Marechaussee.

Media reports showed pictures of the unnamed man splayed face down on the floor with a policeman’s weapon trained on him before he was escorted away.

The reports added the lounge was cleared as a precaution for some 20 minutes.
