BEIJING: A coal mine flooded in northern China on Monday, leaving 11 miners missing, state media reported.

The accident happened Monday morning in Tongchuan city in Shaanxi province, the official Xinhua News Agency said. A total of 67 workers were in the mine shaft but the rest managed to escape, Xinhua said, citing the Tongchuan city government. Rescuers were attempting to find the missing.

China’s mines have long been the world’s deadliest, but safety improvements have reduced the number of deaths in recent years.
