French, US Special Forces assisting in Bamako hostage situation

WASHINGTON/PARIS: French and US Special Forces are assisting in the operation to free hostages being held at the hotel in the Malian capital.


“In response to a request by Malian authorities, the defence minister has decided to send a unit of Special Forces,” a defence ministry statement read over the telephone to Reuters said.

Earlier US Army Colonel Mark Cheadle, a spokesman for the U.S. Africa Command, also said that U.S. Special Forces were assisting in the incident in the capital city of Bamako, AFP reported.

The US unit helped free 6 Americans that were caught up in the hostage situation at the Raddison Blu hotel.

According to reports the French forces arrived on site since 1300 GMT.
