German interior minister to present new security measures

BERLIN: Germany’s interior minister is presenting a package of measures meant to beef up security in the country following a recent string of attacks.

Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged last month to do “everything humanly possible” to keep Germany safe.

That came after several attacks rattled the country, including two carried out by asylum-seekers and claimed by the militant Islamic State group. German media reports have indicated that Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere’s proposals on Thursday will include making it easier to deport terror suspects.

Some members of Merkel’s conservative party have called for measures such as a ban on all-body veils worn by some Muslim women and a tightening of the rules on dual citizenship. Those appear to have little chance of becoming reality.
