India bus crash kills 21, injures 17

NEW DELHI: At least 21 people were killed and 17 injured Wednesday when a bus collided with a truck at high speed in central India, local media reported.

The accident occurred when the bus carrying 38 passengers collided head-on with a truck on the Khandwa-Indore road, in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, state news agency reported, quoting police.

Both vehicles were moving at high speed, agency reported, adding that the injured were rushed to hospital.

Deadly traffic accidents are common in India, with more than 200,000 fatalities annually, according to the World Health Organization.

Transport analysts attribute the huge number of accidents to poor roads, badly maintained vehicles and reckless driving.
