Indian president’s wife passes away

NEW DELHI: Wife of Indian President Pranab Mukherjee passed away on Tuesday morning, according to a report published on the Indian local news website.


Suvra Mukherjee was a heart patient and had been ill for some time. She had been admitted to the hospital last week with a respiratory problem and was kept in the intensive care unit, the report added.

Mrs Mukherjee’s death was confirmed by the Indian presidential palace.

“It is informed with deep sorrow that First Lady Suvra Mukherjee passed away this morning (Tuesday). She (died) at 10.51 a.m.,” said a statement.

The Indian president’s deceased wife was known to be a talented painter who had a number of group and solo exhibitions to her name.

She was a Rabindra Sangeet vocalist and had founded the Geetanjali Troupe.

Mrs Mukherjee had also authored two books.
