ISLAMABAD: On Thursday, the mulish potato prices required the federal government to permit duty-free import of an extra 100,000 tons of potatoes to reinforce previous imports of 200,000 lots. The decision was adopted at a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, conductued directly upward by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar. The committee expanded the deadline for duty-free potato imports till Nov 15.
On Thursday, the potato prices centered on Rs. 70 per kg in most of the government-controlled Ramazan bazaars notwithstanding restated threats and policy determinations by the finance minister over the final four months. In the open market, it was being sold at Rs75-80 per kg.
