Preventing undue expenditure during elections not EC’s duty, says CEC

ISLAMABAD: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) retired Justice Sardar Raza Khan on Wednesday has said that to prevent the excess expenditure of money during elections is not the responsibility of Election Commission.


A consultation meeting of political parties headed by Chief Election Commissioner was held in Islamabad and was attended by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Pakistan People Party(PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leaders’.

While addressing the session, Sardar Raza Khan said that the court has held the Election Commission responsible for taking steps to conduct impartial polls.

He said that Election Commission has the right to monitor election expenses however; to prevent the excessive expenditure is not its duty.

He urged that in the present circumstances processions and rallies should be banned for peaceful elections whereas it will also avert the loss of precious human lives.

CEC also revealed that in the light of Supreme Court’s (SC) decision Election Commission has prepared a electoral code of conduct.
