LAHORE: Singer, Actor Ali Zafar was served an Rs2 billion defamation notice by singer Meesha Shafi’s legal team for making ‘false, malicious and defamatory statements’ against Shafi on multiple news channels.
In April 2018, Shafi claimed to be sexually harassed by Zafar on more than one occasion. Zafar denied those allegations and filed a defamation suit against Shafi. Advocate Hina Jeelani and her team sent the notice.
Zafar in his brief media talk said that Meesha wants to become Malala, the said remarks also insulted the Nobel laureate, stated the notice.
The ombudsman didn’t absolve Zafar from the charges leveled against him and rejected the petition merely on technical grounds, the notice added. The case is challenged before the Lahore High Court, said Shafi’s legal team.
Their client (Meesha Shafi) got the Canadian citizenship in 2016 hence Zafar’s allegations that she allegedly framed him to move abroad are baseless and false, the notice further added.
Shafi’s legal team demanded an apology from Zafar within 15 days or else pay Rs2 billion in damages for slandering her reputation.
