Machh jail ready to execute Saulat Mirza on Tuesday

KARACHI: Balochistan’s Machh jail authorities have finalised all the arrangements to execute death row convict and former Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) worker Saulat Mirza tomorrow (Tuesday).

According to jail officials, the convict had a last meeting with his family members today.

Saulat will be hanged at 4:30 am on May 12.

On Friday, Sindh High Court (SHC) rejected an application of Mirza’s wife seeking deferment of her husband’s execution. The court upheld Supreme Court’s past decision on Mirza’s hanging.

Mirza was sentenced to death in 1999 for the murder of then managing director of Karachi Electric Supply Corporation Shahid Hamid, his driver, and a guard in 1997 in Karachi’s Defence area.

Saulat Mirza was scheduled to be executed on 19 March but the death row inmate in a video made startling revelations regarding the MQM and appealed for a delay in his execution.

Mirza received a stay in his execution for 72 hours by the president which was later extended till April 30. During this time a joint investigation team formed to probe Mirza’s allegations visited him at the Machh Jail.
