PM, President expresses condolence over Mina incident

ISLAMABAD/LONDON: President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif have expressed deep grief and sorrow over the sad demise of the pilgrims due to the stampede at Mina.

The Prime Minister has prayed for eternal peace and bliss for the departed souls and commiserated with the bereaved families.

PM Nawaz has directed the Pakistan’s Ambassador in Saudi Arabia to visit the injured at the hospitals and provide facilitations to the injured and the martyred as much as possible.

A spokesman of Saudi Directorate of Civil Defense said the incident took place at nine in the morning.

Giving details, he said pilgrims were flocking to Jamarat site to throw pebbles at grand Jamarat Aqaba when there was a sudden increase in number of pilgrims heading towards Jamarat facility.

The tragic incident occurred across the street number (204) at its intersection with the street number 223 in Mina and led to a stampede.

The spokesman said that immediately following the falling of a large number of pilgrims at the site of stampede, the security men and Saudi Red Crescent Authority’s personnel rushed there to control the situation. They prevented the pilgrims traffic towards the incident site and took immediate procedures to rescue and save the pilgrims.
