Rangers powers not extended by Sindh govt

KARACHI: The special police powers delegated to Sindh rangers for raids and arrests, stood expired beyond the midnight of July 07 (Tuesday) as the provincial government did not issue any order in this connection.

It should be mentioned here that the paramilitary force was assigned these additional powers on September 4, 2013 for arrests and raids in order to curb targeted killings, extortion mafia activities, kidnapping for ransom and other sabotage activities.

These powers lapsed at midnight today as Sindh Home Department said it received no directives from the provincial government in connection with the rangers powers.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah said that the matter relating the rangers powers will be taken to Sindh assembly that will take decision in this regard.

“We will also talk to the rangers over powers,” he added.

According to an earlier notification issued by Sindh Home Department, rangers were allowed to cordon off, block any place and launch search or conduct raid anywhere across the city.

Sindh Government had rendered special powers to rangers for arresting culprits from anywhere and launching investigations.
