Vote count underway in Gilgit Baltistan after peaceful polling


GILGIT: Vote count got under way in Gilgit Baltistan after a daylong peaceful polling on Monday.


The polling in all seven districts of the mountainous region continued till 5pm without any break.

Gilgit Baltistan administration declared a public holidays to facilitate the voters.

With 268 contestants in the fray for 24 Legislative Assembly seats, tough competition is expected between candidates of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) set up over 1100 polling stations – 282 of them declared ‘very sensitive’ – where more than 615,000 registered voters will cast their votes.

Army personnel have been called to perform security duties during the elections.
