Court adjourns hearing of Dr Asim’s corruption reference until March 5

KARACHI: Accountability court has adjourned hearing of corruption reference against former petroleum minister Dr Asim Hussain until March 5.

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) officials presented the alleged culprit before court in tight security along with his mother and sister. Counsel for the defendant stated that his client’s surgery is being delayed despite court’s orders.

He said that medical board had recommended surgical treatment of his client. The court, turning to the investigation officer stated that report of the medical board has not been filed. Upon which, the accountability department’s official said that it falls under jail administration’s jurisdiction to follow court orders of that nature.

NAB official also stated reference against the accused would be filed in the court within two to three days.

The court remarked that the bureau should file reference within the due time. The department has time until February 29, official replied.

However, the court directed the accountability authority to file reference until February 26.

Dr Asim was arrested in August 2015 by Pakistan Rangers from the office of Higher Education Commissioner (HEC) in Sindh. A terror facilitation case was launched against him in November the last year.

On the other hand, NAB is pursuing a corruption case against the former petroleum minister.

However, the accused has pleaded not guilty to both the charges. Under NAB’s reference against the alleged culprit, Pakistan People’s Party’s (PPP) Dr Asim pocketed commissions, laundered money and allotted pieces of land illegally.

During terror case hearing on February 13 in anti-terrorism court (ATC), Rangers and Sindh government once again entered a tiff as Rangers counsel declared investigation officer’s report ‘based on dishonesty’.

However, the court had turned the report filed by the investigation officer back, terming it incomplete.
