Dr Asim files bail plea in anti-terrorism court

KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and former federal minister Dr Asim Hussain’s lawyers have submitted a bail plea in the anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday.

The plea states that the accused has neither treated nor sheltered terrorists at his hospital and he is being politically victimised.

Dr Asim informed court that DSP Altaf Hussain has already declared him innocent. A Class report was also presented in this regard.

On the other hand, the accountability court ordered to provide medical facilities to Dr Asim in a private hospital.

Earlier, while presenting the arguments, defense lawyer Asim told court that his client is mentally ill. His memory is getting weak day by day.

He said doctors have recommended physiotherapy for him but the facility is not available at Jinnah Hospital.

The accused, chairman of the Sindh Higher Education Commission, was arrested on Aug 26 last year during the ongoing Karachi operation.

A close aide to ex-president Asif Ali Zardari, Dr Asim Hussain has been accused of money laundering and unfair distribution of natural gas quotas as the federal petroleum minister.

He is also being investigated for suspected ‘terror financing’ and offering treatment to suspected criminals at his health facilities.
