KARACHI: Former Karachi mayor and dissident former leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Mustafa Kamal on Wednesday announced that his new political party would be called ‘Pak Sar Zameen’.

Speaking at a ceremony organized in Karachi today on the same day as Pakistan Day (March 23) was being observed across the country, Kamal said that his party’s objective would be to unite the people of Pakistan.

Kamal said that a large number of people, including intellectuals and thinkers, had approached the dissident MQM leaders since they arrived in Karachi 20 days ago and announced that they were forming a new party in a direct challenge to their former party MQM.

He said that a large team of intellectuals were currently working on the manifesto for the Pak Sar Zameen.

Announcing basic outlines of the manifesto, Kamal said that the party’s objective will be to immediately get a fully devolved local government system implemented in the country with the support of the people.

“Before even speaking about new provinces, we should have implemented fully devolved local government system,” he said.

He said that things in Pakistan would not change without a fully devolved local government system.

Earlier, Kamal said that they had not come with malafide intentions to grab the positions of those in power.

“We have not come here to grab power. Whoever is sitting here, we were all in some sort of position of power. But we threw away those powers when we realized that these perks and privileges will not help us serve the people, “ he said.

Kamal said infrastructure in Pakistan was in a state of disarray. “People of Karachi the witnesses and they are the better judges. When we served our four years, we served every single citizen,” he said.

He said that the people of Pakistan have been divided into several groups.

“Some have been divided in the name of religion, Shia, Sunni, Muhajir, Pakhtun, Siraiki, Sindhi, Baloch. Some have been divided on political lines. Others have been divided on the basis of ethnicity, race or colour. We have been broken into several pieces,” he said.

“But, no matter what happens to us, we will not let Pakistan be polarized further. This is why we did not even make a separate flag for our party lest it becomes the root cause of conflict,” he said.

“We will only give the Pakistan flag to our workers. We will hoist the flag in our office, in our programs. Who can stop me from wearing the Pakistani flag on our chests? Whoever raises this flag, whether from the PTI, PPP, PMLN, PMLQ, ANP, from any ethnicity, race or colour, it will be our responsibility to treat them as our own,” he said.
