LAHORE/KARACHI: The nomination papers of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif were approved by returning officers (RO) on Tuesday as election commission of Pakistan concludes the scrutiny process of nomination papers.
PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif will contest election from NA-132 (Lahore), NA-249 (Karachi) and NA-250 (Karachi).
PML-N stalwart Khawaja Saad Rafique’s nomination papers were also cleared by the RO. He will contest election from NA-131 Lahore.
The nomination papers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan from NA-131 Lahore, NA-143 Karachi were also accepted by RO.
However, Imran Khan’s nomination papers from NA-53 were rejected by RO. According to the returning officer, the candidate failed to fill the affidavit as per the requirements.
The nomination papers of former president Asif Ali Zardari for NA-213 (Nawabshah) have also been approved, a day after two petitioners withdrew objections against his candidature.
RO rejects Sattar’s NA-245 nomination papers
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday rejected nomination papers of Muttahida Qaumi Movement–Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Farooq Sattar from the NA-245 constituency.
Returning Officer (RO) Ahsan Khan said Sattar’s candidature for NA-245 had been rejected because he is an absconder in two cases and did not mention this in his nomination papers.
However, the MQM-P stalwart’s counsel remarked that his client was unaware of the two cases.
Sattar has submitted nomination papers from three constituencies in Karachi — NA-241, 245 and 247 — to contest the general election scheduled to be held on July 25.
Musharraf’s nomination papers, filed from Chitral for NA-1, were rejected by RO Mohammad Khan.
According to the revised election schedule issued by the ECP on June 8, the last date for filing appeals against acceptance or rejection of nomination papers by the ROs is June 22. The last date for decision on the appeals by tribunals is June 27.
Revised lists of validly nominated candidates will be published on June 28 whereas the last date for withdrawal of candidature is June 29.
The final list of contesting candidates is expected to be published on June 30.
