PM Khan arrives China for four day visit

BEIJING: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday arrived Beijing for a four-day official visit to China where he was welcomed by President Xi Jinping and Federal Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi.


The Prime Minister, accompanied by federal cabinet members, is visiting the country on the invitation of President Xi Jinping to attend the 2nd Belt and Road Forum in Beijing on Friday.

Speaking to media prior to boarding his flight, PM said China is Pakistan’s “close friend and iron brother”, and that he is visiting the country to take the partnership between nations to a new height.

PM said he is confident his visit will further broaden the two-way relations and the friendship between the two nations is based on mutual respect. He said he will exchange viewpoints on matters of mutual interests with the Chinese leadership.

PM said he is grateful for China’s cooperation and categorical favor and he aims to further expand the relationship between two countries.

PM said the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a flagship project and is a top priority of his government. He added, “in phase II of CPEC we are jointly focusing on socio-economic development, job creation, livelihood projects and accelerating cooperation in agriculture and industrial cooperation including Special Economic Zones.”

PM Imran will also deliver a keynote speech in the opening ceremony of the forum and participate in the Leaders’ Round Table and participate in events related to the Belt and Road Initiative.

Belt and Road Forum provides a platform to countries participating in Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) for exchanging views and experiences on regional connectivity; policy synergy; socio-economic development and trade and commerce. Leaders from 40 countries and delegations from over 100 countries, international organisations and the corporate sector would participate in the event.

In addition to participating in the Belt and Road Forum, PM Imran will also hold bilateral meetings with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang. PM is also expected to meet seven important world leaders during the visit.

Pak-China Friendship Association will arrange an exclusive luncheon in honor of PM and on April 26, the Chinese President will give PM honorary dinner in Great Public Hall.

On April 27, PM will visit the International Conference Center and will meet the Chinese leadership on April 28.

PM will participate in the honorary luncheon of Pakistan Business Forum and will also pay a visit to the China Pavilion and will plant a memorial tree there. PM is also expected to meet delegations of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

FM Qureshi, who is currently in China, said a special investment conference will be arranged during PM’s visit in which Pakistani investors along with the Chinese businessmen will participate.

FM Qureshi said the main focus of the conference will to highlight investment opportunities available in Pakistan.

PM will return to his homeland on the morning of April 29.
