PM Khan inaugurates 24/7 Torkham border crossing

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday formally inaugurated the opening of the Torkham border crossing for 24 hours.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan as he inaugurated the Integrated Transit Trade Management System accompanied the premier.

The premier will also inaugurate Pak-Afghan Friendship Hospital at Torkham, reported Radio Pakistan, adding Afghan patients arriving in Pakistan via the crossing point will be provided medical facilities in the hospital.

Addressing the press conference after the inauguration, PM said that with the opening of the border, increasing trade will provide employment opportunities and the area will prosper.

Peace in Afghanistan will change the whole region as it will trigger greater trade activity up to the Central Asian States. He said this will also generate immense job opportunities for our people, said PM.

Responding to a question, PM said that the democracy do not flourish in the countries where the opposition don’t even have an ideology, adding that the opposition wants to keep him under pressure from day first.

The previous governments left behind the historic fiscal and trade deficits which resulted in depreciation of rupee and price hike, said PM.

Regarding Afghan peace process, the premier said that Pakistan will make efforts for resumption of stalled peace talks, however, the talks between the US and Taliban collapsed. He said it will be tragedy if the talks do not resume and the Taliban do not participate in the Afghan elections.

Premier said that he will insist for resumption of peace process during his meeting with the US President Donald Trump on Monday.

Peace in Afghanistan is in the interest of Afghan people as well as Pakistan, he said.

India is under the occupation of extremist and racist Hindus, he said, adding, the ideology of RSS is full of hatred against Pakistan and the Muslims.

Anyone who entered Kashmir will be the enemy of Pakistan and Kashmiris, he added.

He strongly condemned the Ghotki incident describing it a conspiracy against the country ahead of his address to the UN General Assembly session. He said attacks against the minorities are contrary to our constitution as well as teachings of Islam.

Pakistan, initially, opened the Torkham border on trail basis for the first time earlier this month, to enhance bilateral trade and facilitate movement of pedestrians across the border.

The National Logistics Cell (NLC), in coordination with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has completed arrangements for the round-the-clock, trans-border trade terminal.

The work to upgrade the terminal began after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, on his last visit in June, requested PM Khan to facilitate trade between the two countries through the border crossing.

The Torkham border terminal had brought about a paradigm shift in regulating two-way movement of passengers and cargo and had helped curbing the cross-border movement of miscreants, illegal trade, narcotics trafficking as well as backward flow of transit trade goods to Pakistan, said NLC.

The border terminal has generated significant economic activities in the area which is largely benefiting the local KhugaKhel Shinwari tribe, added NLC.
