LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president, Shehbaz Sharif, along with party leaders – Ayaz Sadiq, Ahsan Iqbal, and Marriyum Aurangzeb – on Thursday condemned the arrest of former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in liquefied natural gas (LNG) import contract case.

Speaking in a press conference hours after the ex-premier arrest, the PML-N president claimed, “Khaqan was arrested in a crude manner; when he asked for [arrest] warrants, the NAB officials just stared at each others’ faces,” adding, “NAB DG came himself and showed a WhatsApp message. When Khaqan asked for a warrant signed by the NAB chairman, then they got a photocopy.”

Shehbaz alleged that the Prime Minister Imran ‘Niyazi’ Khan wants to hide economic deficit behind the arrests. [PM] sabotaged the economy in the past 11 months, former Punjab chief minister further alleged.

Shehbaz said Abbasi had a key role in eliminating gas load-shedding as well as activating other gas power plants.

Shehbaz alleged that the government is doing the politics of revenge against PML-N in the name of accountability and those who resolved the public’s issues are becoming the target of revenge.

Shehbaz dubbed PM Khan an “arrogant premier” who, he threatened, will face the consequences for political victimisation.

Addressing the press conference, PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal said another premier who served the public was arrested today. He dubbed PM Khan “incompetent premier” and “Pakistani Hitler” who, Iqbal alleged, is shifting his responsibilities on the opposition.

Iqbal said NAB should change its name to PML-N Accountability Bureau.

PML-N spokesperson, Maryam Aurangzeb, addressing the press conference said if the arrests of PML-N leaders by NAB benefit the country then the bureau should go ahead and arrest PML-N in its entirety.

PML-N vice-president Maryam Nawaz, in a tweet, condemned the arrest of Abbasi and said another premier who was elected after gaining public votes was arrested today.

Will, whoever is elected by the people, face such lawlessness and humiliation? Maryam asked.

The ex-prime minister was arrested by a 12-member NAB team in a multi-billion-rupee case related to the award of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import contract. He was on his way to attend a press conference, accompanied by Iqbal and Aurangzeb, when he was arrested on the Thokar Niaz Baig interchange.

NAB also issued arrest warrants of PML-N leader Miftah Ismail and former Pakistan State Oil (PSO) managing director Shaikh Imranul Haque today for the case pertaining to the LNG contract subsequently after Abbasi’s arrest.
