ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaisar issued the production orders of former president Asif Ali Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khawaja Saad Rafique on Wednesday.
Both the leaders were arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in separate corruption cases.
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) co-chairperson was arrested by NAB in the fake bank accounts case on June 10 after Islamabad High Court (IHC) rejected his plea seeking an extension in their interim bail.
The case relates to transactions worth hundreds of millions of rupees to the two leaders’ private companies, allegedly, through fake bank accounts.
Shah said that the production order was issued for the ongoing budget session expected to last till June 29. The PPP leaders – Abdul Qadir Patel, Shazia Marri, Shagufta Jumani, Agha Rafiq – have received a copy of the production order.
On Tuesday, Lahore High Court (LHC) had rejected the bail application of Saad Rafique.
Saad Rafique is a prime suspect in a corruption reference along with his brother Salman Rafique filed by NAB earlier this year. Khawaja Brothers have been accused by NAB of wrongfully gaining Rs18.2 million approximately from M/s Paragon City (Pvt) Limited in their bank accounts and they failed to account for the illegal gains.
The bureau had initiated an inquiry against both brothers for allegedly owning assets beyond known means but it was closed in 2007 after they both won prize bonds.
