Rasheed appointed as ECP parliamentary committee’s chairman

ISLAMABAD: The first meeting of the parliamentary committee to finalise names of members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) took place at the Parliament House today (Friday) where the participants proposed Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed’s name for the committee’s chairman slot.

“It is a key responsibility to give the people of Pakistan an Election Commission that is fully capable to hold balanced, transparent and unbiased elections,” he said.

He said: “We have to do this work on fast track so that electoral process continues without any hurdle.”

Pervaiz Rasheed said that the government and opposition members will present their recommendations within a day or two.

To a question regarding PTI‘s cooperation on the matter, he said: “PTI member Shah Mehmood Qureshi has fully trusted me and I will try my best to meet his expectations.”

The Minister said that electoral reforms were introduced to strengthen the Election Commission. It is an important institution, thus, a consensus on the issue of appointments of its members is must.

Earlier today, the Information Minister once again touched Opposition Leader Syed Khurshid Shah‘s knee and told media that he demonstrates this gesture because he respects Shah.

On Monday, Pakistan People Party (PPP) Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari took a dig at the ruling PML-N after a video of Pervaiz Rashid bowing before Opposition Leader Khurshid Shah emerged on TV screens.

Bilawal posted a message on Twitter: “When they are in trouble, they touch your feet and once out of trouble, they hold your neck.”
