World Cup 2019: England defeats South Africa by 104 runs

OVAL: In the opening match of the World Cup 2019, host England defeated South Africa by 104 runs with Jofra Archer taking 3 match winning wickets.


The Proteas, chose to field first after winning the toss and managed to dismiss nine of the English batsmen; but Ben Stokes’ 89, Jason Roy’s 54, Joe Root’s 51 and skipper Eoin Morgan’s 57 runs gave the English a powerful stroke of 311 for Proteas to chase.

Rassie van der Dussen, with 61 and Quinton de Kock, with 68 runs, remained the only top scorers of South Africa as the English sabotaged the Proteas batting side with Liam Plunkett and Ben Stokes taking two wickets while Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali each taking one wicket.

The second game of the tournament will be played between Pakistan and West Indies at Trent Bridge, starting at 2:30 pm on Friday.
