MANCHESTER: Host England on Tuesday set a gigantic target of 398 for Afghanistan, highest of the tournament so far as skipper Morgan, Root, and Bairstow played brilliant strokes here at Old Trafford, Manchester.
Eoin Morgan with 148, Root with 88, and Bairstow with 90 runs sabotaged Afghan bowling side with Dawlat Zadran and skipper Gulbadin Naib finding some solace with 3 dismissals each.
Comprising one of the toughest squads at this year’s World Cup, favourites England will be without the services of opener Jason Roy who suffered an injury while fielding during England’s win over West Indies on Friday.
For Afghanistan, the biggest disappointment in the World Cup for them has been the inability to score a bigger total to give themselves a chance to put the opposition under pressure.
England will be well-prepared to face the three quality spinners in the Afghanistan squad which can be a threat to the opposition.
