Many iPhone users have recently been left puzzled trying to figure out why their smartphones have suddenly become “very slow” for no obvious reason.

It turns out that Apple has a new feature that slows down older iPhones on purpose, and it’s not about encouraging people to buy the latest models.

According to the company, this is done to prevent gadgets with fading batteries from switching off abruptly.

“Our goal is to deliver the best experience for customers, which includes overall performance and prolonging the life of their devices.

Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components,” Apple explained in a statement to media outlets.

The new fix was released for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE last year and has been recently extended to the iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2. In the future, the company plans to roll it out for other products as well.
