Samsung’s new phone might literally read the palm of your hand

Samsung has filed a patent application for a mobile phone that can read the palm of a person’s hand, potentially leading to a new unique authentication system.

The patent shows that this functionality is meant to deliver password hints to the user — it won’t unlock the phone directly. The filing includes an image of a user taking a photo of a hand and using the lines in the palm to complete letters on the device’s screen.

The rear sensor would analyse a user’s hand and determine the complex design of its many lines to authenticate them. Samsung filing does not mention anything beyond providing password hints.

Samsung says that the technology will not replace the traditional biometric systems like fingerprints or face scanners and will only provide password hints to unlock the phone if a person forgets it.
