APC meeting: Opposition parties to field joint candidate for presidential elections

ISLAMABAD: On Saturday, the parties in All Parties Conference (APC) have agreed upon to field joint candidate for the upcoming presidential elections, well placed sources confirmed.

Speaking to media after the meeting, Ahsan Iqbal confirmed that the forum had decided to field joint candidate for the office of the president. He said the name of the candidate would be announced on Sunday (tomorrow) as PPP leader have asked for some time to take their leadership into confidence over the discussion.

Furthermore, Ahsan Iqbal asserted that the PML(N) has no objection over giving rights to overseas Pakistanis to cast vote, however he object on the haste the procedure is being carried out.

The PML-N had today convened an All Parties Conference in Murree to hold consultations regarding the nomination of a candidate for the presidential election.

PPP, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F), Awami National Party and other party leaders were invited to the conference.

The 11-party grand opposition alliance’s consultative meeting will be chaired by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif at his residence in Murree; the alliance includes Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, Awami National Party, Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), National Party, Qaumi Watan Party and Pak Sarzameen Party.

The PPP delegation consisted of Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Syed Khursheed Shah, Raza Rabbani, Aitzaz Ahsan and Senator Sherry Rehman.

Whereas, PTI spokesperson and information minister Fawad Chaudhry claimed that DR. Arif Alvi will be successful in the presidential elections.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf has nominated it’s party member Dr. Arif Alvi for the president candidacy.

The Presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 4.
