Investigation team formed to investigate ‘liquorgate’

KARACHI: On Sunday, An investigation team was formed to probe the discovery of liquor bottles from the room of a hospital where Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sharjeel Inam Memon was under treatment.


A day earlier, the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Mian Saqib Nisar paid a surprise visit to the hospital in Karachi’s Clifton vicinity. During his visit, the top judge discovered alcohol bottles, drugs, and cigarettes in Memon’s room.

In a notification issued earlier today, Additional IG Karachi Dr Amir Shaikh nominated DIG South Javaid Alam Odho as the head of the probe committee. SSP Investigation South Abdullah Jan and SSP Investigation East Shabir Memon are also part of the team.

In the First Information Report (FIR) — lodged 11 hours after the alcohol bottles were discovered — Memon along with the police officers on duty at the hospital was given a clean chit in the case.

On Saturday, the chief justice made surprise visit to three hospitals including Karachi’s Ziauddin Hospital – located at Clifton- to visit ailing political prisoners.

The chief justice visited the Mr. Memon’s room, which had been declared sub-jail, and reportedly stayed there for two to three minutes to inquire his heath, after visiting different wards.

The stuff was confiscated by the court upon recovery.

The chief justice revealed that three bottles of alcohols were found in Sharjeel Memon’s room after returning to SC’s Karachi Registry while hearing hearing a case.

He stated that when he was inquired about the recovered bottles, and he refused to accept that the bottles belonged to him.

“The attorney general should visit and see what is happening,” he added.

Blood samples of the former Sindh information minister were also taken.
