PM, COAS meet ahead of NSC meeting

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif on Friday held a one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ahead of today’s key meeting of the Nation Security Committee (NSC).

According to our correspondent, the two high-ups discussed internal and regional security matters, the ongoing Zarb-e-Azb operation and aftermaths of the recent atrocities in India-held Kashmir.

“The Prime Minister has expressed his satisfaction over security and law and order situation of the country, as both the leaders vowed to continue the war against militancy and terrorism with the same pace,” our correspondent said.

The meeting between PM and army chief came after a gape of two months.

Today’s NSC meeting will also review national security issues and regional situation. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will chair the meeting.

High-ups including Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, heads of armed forces, Director General Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Director General Intelligence Bureau (IB), Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Advisor to PM on National Security Nasir Janjua, Advisor to PM on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Minister for Information and Broadcasting Pervaiz Rashid will attend the meeting, according to a press release issued by PM Office Media Wing.

PM Sharif returned to the federal capital Thursday to resume his official work after spending 48 days in London for his medical treatment and subsequently more than a week at his Lahore residence.

On May 22, Sharif left the country shortly after the so-called Panama Papers linked his family to a series of offshore companies.

The premier insists his family has done “nothing wrong”, saying the claims had been investigated twice, decades ago, under the tenure of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf.

But the opposition has demanded his resignation after the leaked papers claimed his children owned London property through an offshore company.
