KARACHI: Renowned poet, biographer and scholar Jaun Elia is being remembered on the occasion of his 16th death anniversary,on Thursday (today).
Jaun Elia was born on December 14, 1931 in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. He was the youngest of his siblings and breathed his last on 8 November, 2002.
His father, Shafiq Hasan Elia, was involved in art and literature and was also an astrologer and a poet. Elia migrated to Pakistan in 1957 and settled in Karachi. He wrote his first Urdu couplet when he was just 8.
His famous poetry collections include Shayed, Ya’ani, Gumaan, Lekan, and Goya. He also had complete command over Arabic, Persian, and Hebrew.
He was fluent in Arabic, English, Persian, Sanskrit and Hebrew. The poet briefly worked as an editor with Ismaili Tariqah and Religious Education Board in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan.
For his literary services, he got the Presidential Pride of Performance Award.
