Rahul Gandhi taken into custody by Indian police

NEW DELHI: Indian Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi was taken away by police from New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar area, according to Indian media reports.


The Congress Vice President, along with his party supporters had gathered to protest in Jantar Mantar against the suicide of an army man, Subedar Ram Kishen Grewal.

Police said that it took away Rahul Gandhi ‘for his own safety’. Police had taken away in a police vehicle to Parliament police station, according to details.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi was taken into police custody twice and taken to several police stations. The leader was reportedly arrested while trying to meet family of the deceased army man.

The Indian army man had committed suicide on Tuesday outside a government building by ingesting Sulphas tablets. He had served in the Indian army for 30 years.

The demonstrators mostly from the Opposition parties in India were protesting over the government’s failure to bring to fruition the One Rank One Pension (OROP) promise.
